In 1994 three Israeli mathematicians, (Professor Elyahu Rips, Doron Witzman and Yoav Rosenberg), published a study in the scholarly journal Statistical Science (September: pages 429-438) about what they called Equidistant Letter Sequences (ELS). They programmed a computer to scan the Book of Genesis for the encrypted names of 32 Sages who lived between the 9th and 18th centuries, checking every nth letter, where n can take any value. The program found most of the names, the odds against this occuring by chance calculated at 62,500 to 1. The word "Torah" was found in both the books of Genesis and Exodus at the same ELS of 50 letters, starting in both books. The odds against this happening by chance are calculated to be three million to one.
